The world is confronted with enormous challenges: Global energy demand is climbing rapidly due to population growth and progressing industrialization. At the same time, the CO2 emissions have to be drastically reduced within the next few years in order to prevent a disastrous climate change.
It is for this reason that the topics energy efficiency and renewable energies under the slogan “GoGreen” have become an essential part of the heat 11 company strategy. What exactly is meant by the term “GoGreen” and how the customers of heat 11 should benefit from this strategy Dr. Dietmar Hunold and Stephan Kraus, both general manager at heat 11, explain in the following interview:
heatnews: What exactly is meant by the term “GoGreen”?
Kraus: “GoGreen” is an essential part of our company strategy with which we pursue two objectives: First the sustainable reduction in costs for our customers by the efficient use of energy and secondly the protection of our planet by reducing the CO2 emissions. In short, the objectives can be described with “Reduce costs – Protect the climate”.
Dr. Hunold: Our experiences from many projects have shown that the increase in energy efficiency of production plants has not only a positive effect on the environment but can also improve the economic efficiency of the plants drastically. This is easy to calculate in Euro and Cent.
heatnews: What are the advantages for the operators of plants?
Dr. Hunold: By means of simple modifications on existing plants or ancillary equipment on new plants, the energy efficiency of heat transfer plants can be increased of more than 90 %. This saves energy costs drastically – whether for electricity, gas, oil or other fuels.
Kraus: And in the long term we all benefit when the global warming can be successfully stopped by the reduction of the CO2 emissions.
heatnews: Are these investments not very expensive?
Dr. Hunold: Expenditures for the improvement of the energy efficiency of plants are mostly very profitable investments. Their amortisation time in many cases is under one year, such investments will normally amortise within 1 to 2 years. In case of an operating period of 5 to 15 years it is a profitable business.
Kraus: For the implementation of these measures a new investment of the entire plant is mostly not needed. Efficiency improvements are profitable in almost every scaling.
heatnews: How is the energy efficiency specifically improved?
Dr. Hunold: Approaches can always be found: Conversion of the fuels, usage of waste heat, the dimensioning of plant concepts or individual components such as e.g. pumps or burners usually lead to astonishing results. Savings in up to the four-digit range are possible and often simply to implement! We offer all interested partners the opportunity to get an expert opinion for their plant and a proposal for the conversion with saving potential.
heatnews: What else comprises “GoGreen”?
Kraus: Besides the improvement of the energy efficiency of existing plants, an inherent part of “GoGreen” are the generation and treatment of heat, electricity and gas from biomass or the thermal solar energy. Project examples are the Stadtreinigung Hamburg or the solar projects “Extresol3” and “Arenales” that heat 11 and heat 11 solar have completed or are currently still in progress.
Dr. Hunold: By this we make a significant contribution with our partners to realize climate-neutral and reliable solutions to cover the world’s growing demand for energy.
